Today’s objection- “I need to try the products before I join you!”

Yesterday’s blog addressed the objection “I don’t want to bug my friends!” In part 6 of the “Objection Series” we will address the objection “I need to try the products first!”

This is a totally valid concern–and your prospect may decide to try the product first (which is why it’s always a good idea to revisit your prospects–who are often times your best “product ambassador”) and say: “How are you loving the product? I am not sure if I shared, but as a distributor of the products I get them at wholesale price and make money by referring them to others too. Can I share with your our distributor program to learn how you can get more discounts and benefits with the product and sharing them with others?”

In the video below I will share how one of my rock stars (a top earner in our company) got a great partner using this approach. Then read below the video for more language and ideas on handling this common objection.

I need to try the products first

If they are local, and I can get a product sample to them, I say, “here, try this now, and tell me what you think!” Or- tell them that their start up pack is a great way to sample all of your products at a great price, and they get to learn as they earn!

I would also say: “As you know our company has a proven track record of product success. This is a learn as you earn business. When you purchase your products as a consultant, you’ll get wholesale pricing. You’ll be able to try them all as you’re getting started, and all the while build a really great business! In the meantime the company provides incredible product testimonials and before-and-afters. Let me share those with you.”

Again, if they want to try the product first, be sure to follow up later with the language at the top of the blog, and referenced in the video!

Don’t want to bug my friends or family

“Thank goodness! I don’t want you to bug your friends and family either! That is not what I do. I share what I’m doing & pick their brains to see if there’s anyone they know this would be great for.  I find what people have need of and then I try to fill that need whether it be with our product, or a need for extra income. I simply use a referral approach, asking them whom they know! Sometimes they identify themselves! We do that all the time—asking for referrals for babysitters, dry cleaners, etc!”

Today’s objection- “I don’t know enough people to be successful in network marketing!”

Yesterday’s blog addressed the objection “I’m not a salesperson!” In part 4 of the “Objection Series” we will address the objection “I don’t know anyone!”, or “I don’t have a large network!”, or “I don’t know anyone I can share this with!”

This is an objection I can personally relate to, because when I started my business I was a shy, broke, kindergarten teacher. I didn’t have a large network–most of my friends were young like me! Through personal and professional development I was able to establish a network, make new friendships (the most rewarding part of my business), and today I am a top network marketing leader, and we are six-figure MONTHLY earners (and the #1 earners in our company!)

When I started my business I had just moved, just gotten married…I was a formerly shy teacher in my 20’s, and truly didn’t know many people. But through our profession and proven system, I was able to expand my network and not only meet new customers, and consultants, but also new friends! By the age of 29 I was our company’s first 6 figure MONTHLY earner, and began earning a multiple six figure monthly income by 30!

Here’s what I share with people when they say they don’t know enough people to get started: “What I love about this business is that it’s not necessarily who you know, but people you’ll meet, and be referred to! Plus, this business is a great way to get to know people as well. We will teach you tools to help you reach out and get off to a strong start. You simply have to be coachable and committed to implement our proven system.”

Today’s objection- “I am not a salesperson!”

This is an objection I can personally relate to, as I have never been in sales (I am a former kindergarten teacher) and my only other experience in network marketing before my current company, was being in another company for a day–today I am a top network marketing leader, and we are six-figure MONTHLY earners (and the #1 earners in our company!)

I’m not a salesperson

“Terrific! I’m not looking for salespeople! I’ve never been in sales before. I’m simply looking for passionate people, who when they love something they’ll share. We make recommendations every day for things that we love, though we never get paid for it. “I can appreciate that. Many people are in the same place because of the recent recession. Because money is tight, this is all the more reason to join us! What if I can teach you a simple way to make the money back with our bonuses, during your first month?” (*share your fast start bonuses…if they still cannot start, then share other ideas to save up for the startup costs: such as having a garage sale, selling gold, auctioning household items on ebay, or borrowing money).

Handling Objections in Network Marketing, Direct Sales, and MLM Series!

Today’s Objection: “I don’t have the time!!!”

As the #1 earner of my network marketing company, I am often times asked how to handle objections that come up during the prospecting process in business. First of all let me remind you that much of their reaction is determined by how WE respond. The ABILITY to RESPOND is our RESPONSIBILITY. I am not offended by objections at all–as it usually means the prospect is considering the opportunity enough to not blow me off, and ask me some questions.

Never get on the defense, and always validate your prospects concerns and questions. I like to answer questions and handle objections by sharing stories of people they can relate to whenever possible. I also like to use the “feel- felt- found- method” so they know that I am on their side. So I might say, “oh, I understand how you feel. My partner “so and so” felt the same way when she got started…but here’s what she found out.” Validate them and they will be on your side. “I’m so busy, I don’t have enough time to do this!” 

“ I understand how you feel. I felt the same way when I got started. I was teaching kindergarten full time, and working this business very part time. But that’s not uncommon. We’ve found that most people work this business in very part time hours – working it into your everyday life on your own time, on your own terms! Starting with just about 10-15 hours per week, I was able to build a big business.” Tell stories of people who are working their business part time successfully! After all, most people work our business model around busy lives and schedules–that is the beauty of our business!

How to ROCK “month-end” and make it truly magical…

5 Tips to Make “Month-End Magic” Happen=> 

1) Reach out to anyone who’s expressed an interest in the product:

“Earlier you mentioned interest in my products, and I am just following up to close out my month. Do you have a few minutes that I could give you a quick consultation and get you started on the product? You will love them!”

2) Reach out to anyone who’s expressed interest in the business:

“Earlier you mentioned you were interested in my business, and I am just following up. The next few months in our company are very exciting! Here is why NOW is the perfect time to join us…” (explain to them why “now is the perfect time to join us!”)

3) Run a Facebook campaign that ASKS for help and post it several times a day:  “Friends I am just X orders away from my making a big promotion with my company! How can you help? =>message me today to get a free product consultation!” (post some fabulous before-and-afters, testimonials, specials, press, or pictures!)

4) Sometimes freebies get people off the fence–that’s why department stores offer gifts with purchase, right?! Contact people who previously expressed interest in the product or business. Tell them you are running your own “month-end special” from now through Wednesday & offer a gift with purchase/sign up until the last day of the month!

5) Leverage 3-way calls or coffees with your sponsor to have them help close your prospects.

Remember, the FORTUNE is in the FOLLOW-UP! You have not, if you ask not!

Don’t forget—when talking to people, use the 3 “A’s”—ask them for a time to connect or follow up—speak in the affirmative when you chat (as referenced in the video above)—then assume the sale…. “since we are both on the phone and free, how about I take a few minutes to help get you started? All I need is your billing and shipping info and we can get you on your way!”

If you’re feeling unimportant and like you need a little recognition, I want you to first listen to this video, and understand how important it is that you find satisfaction in self-worth, regardless of who recognizes you. Don’t get me wrong–recognition is also an important piece of our business. So, if you’re a leader who desires to do recognition well, read below the video for more training on this topic…

With that said, recognition IS important and we should attempt to do it well…

Good leaders are great at recognition—for accomplishments both great and small! I’ve heard the saying: “people will work harder for praises than raises!” I know that to be true for myself! I once got a handwritten card from our company president! It felt so good to know that she was watching what I was doing, and I wanted to be sure I stayed on her radar so I posted it in my office, and it motivated me to take daily action in becoming successful! That card meant more to me than anything else I have earned in the business! The great news for the company? It was free! But what it mean to me? It was priceless.

Remember that– Recognition can be free—but the results it produces are priceless!

Recognition= retention! When times are tough, if you’re recognizing not only outcome but activity it encourages people to make one more call, and face one more “no”. In a business where people face a lot of rejection, recognition keeps morale high.

Your groups are made up of a lot of people doing a little bit!  People stay when they are praised and when they feel they are a part of something bigger than themselves!

Create a culture where people are addicted to recognition- it’s like GLUE that holds everything together. Our fastest growing teams have created a “sorority-hood” or sisterhood that their friends want to be a part of and that their team would never want to leave. Recognition & culture creates that!

REMEMBER: You work for your team—they don’t work for you. They make you money, and overtime they will either appreciate or resent that fact—depending on how well you treat them in return. People don’t need to be adored, but they do need to be appreciated. Here are a few ways I create culture and recognize my group

1)   social media

2)   written recognition

3)   personal calls

4)   major milestone recognition

5)   recognition at events & on calls

Let’s talk about HOW to rock recognition in these 5 CATEGORIES:

1) Social Media– it is a great tool that helps you EDIFY leaders, ENCOURAGE teams, ENGAGE your audience online.

USE IT TO:

-Welcome your new business partner. I have new distributors text me the day they get their kit to announce their business formally and to plan the official launch of their business! I tell them: When you get your kit, take a cool picture of you with it. If you have kids or a family, make it fun and do it together! There’s a cool app that allows you to put some fun text on it called “Rhonna” (iPhone app store). You can say something that creates intrigue such as “mommas got a brand new business!” Announce your new business on Facebook, and be sure in the post to include a link to your website “check it out here (link)”! When people “like” the post, or “comment” on it, you know they see it! Message them in their inbox and say “thank you for supporting my business! I saw you comment on my post, and it meant the world to me. Do you have some time that I could share more with you? I’m looking to expand my business and would love your ideas, support, and referrals! What’s a good time and number to reach you?”

I’ll announce them on my personal page a few days following, using the same picture, and tagging them to get them more visibility that week.  This edifies your newbies (they immediately get welcome replies and feel part of the community from your team), it encourages your team to see the team growing plus they get in on the fun of welcoming and congratulating others (which creates culture) but this also engages your online audience who see what fun you’re having and they want to tap into the culture & be a part of your fun and fast growing team!

You can also use social media to recognize people for cars earned, trips achieved, promotions, bonuses, successful events, etc. Post pictures of them, and paint the picture of what’s possible. Tell their “Story”.  This will edify them, encourage your team, and engage your online audience (and theirs too!)

I do this on my personal page and team pages.

I also recognize my customers too—and share their before-and-after’s, and testimonials. This edifies them, encourages our team that our products work & to share the stories, and engages the customers online audience and mine & get them thinking that they should try the product too!

2) Written Recognition rocks

I created personalized cards with our team logo, and inside it says “you rock”! I send these out whenever someone does something that deserves to be celebrated! They always post pictures of them on FB, which again, edifies, encourages and engages.

Sometimes I’ll put little $5 gift cards inside: a coffee gift card to say “your business is brewing! Keep it up!” Or “you’re on TARGET for a great promotion”, and a card to that store to shop! Or “you are totally ROCKIN it”, with an itunes gift card. Little thoughtful tokens go a long way.

Another way to do written recognition well is through doing a spotlight on success, and do monthly recognition newsletters. People love seeing their names in lights. So in addition to making announcements of calls, events, etc. I take a huge section of our monthly newsletter to recognize the rock stars on our team. I recognize super star sellers (the top # of people in personal sales), rock star recruiters, and those who made big promotions. You may want to recognize newbies knockouts too—new people joining the team, or the new people who got off to a strong start in their business! What about even having a distributor of the month who exudes the characteristics of the culture you are trying to create—they help people inside and outside of their team–those going above and beyond to be supportive and collaborative to the entire community of consultants in the company.

3) Personal Calls of Congratulations- It’s a great way to get to know leaders on your team!

4) Major Milestone Recognition For major milestones I like to send a small token of appreciation. The biggest mistake I see leaders make is spending oodles of $ on designer gifts and then their team (who may not be able to afford it) feels pressure to duplicate the same for their downline. I’ll never forget what one of my mentors, Million-dollar earner Donna Johnson reminded me: “Sarah, it’s not a question of if you can afford—the questions is can it be duplicated? What you do, your team will feel they have to duplicate.”

I now ask the question, is this scalable (so, can I do it if I have 5, 50, or 500 promotions at that level someday) and can it duplicate? So, if I do this for my personal team, can they do it for theirs, if they desire to?

For example, for a car achiever, a cool keychain is a great idea! I’ve gone to a coach outlet store, and sent them one for being a great  “coach” to their team, as a volume-based goal is a team achievement! They have awesome passport holders that are great for trip achievers to take on their travels! Flowers, phone calls, and cards are a great option too! Also-personal gifts! Have a team member who has kiddos? Send their family a “pizza night” or “movie night” with a basket full of treats and your favorite movies!!!

We’ve actually sent our corporate team pizza parties on us to thank them for their hard work and all they do—it’s affordable, and makes them feel appreciated too! Be creative, and have fun with it!!! And teach your teams to post the recognition and accomplishments they earn on FB, as you never know who will see those flowers and say “oh, I want to be recognized and be a part of something fun too—I should ask her about this!”

5) Events & Calls

Locally, we’ve done red carpet recognition events to allow our team to dress up, dance, and have fun! We’ve allowed super star sellers, rock star recruiters, and each level of leadership walk the red carpet! We had someone taking pictures so the the “paparazzi” was there, snapping their pictures! At every fun event we do, someone always has an ipod with great music and speakers, and we seem to make a dance party wherever we go—whether it’s in a conference room or on a beach!

Our leaders have also put together after parties at conventions—each pooling money, and as we’ve grown to do big parties with deejays, dancing and photographers. I reinvest into my leaders. These convention parties are like a big “thank you card” to all of them for their hard work each year and it becomes one of highlights of convention, and their year.

To create culture at the big events, we all wear an orange ribbon as an annual team tradition to create inclusion, find each other, and so I can hug, handshake, or high five them and thank them when I see them in a crowd! It’s an awesome tradition!

I also love doing retreats with my leaders too! J We do recognition, have training, and tons of fun too!

Remember—if you’re just starting off, you can also rock recognition for free on your team calls, and by having them stand and be acknowledged at training events, etc.

When all else fails, just start by loving your team & acknowledging them—

People don’t have to be adored, but they do have to be appreciated.

Acknowledgement and honor pleases God. Acknowledge the sources you’ve drawn success from (God, family, friends, mentors, leaders, team). Be thankful and grateful. Acknowledge God and the people He used in your life to place you where you are. If you acknowledge the people who helped you get to where you are, it causes them to want to do it again. If you can’t acknowledge God, or the people he’s used to promote you on any level–why would He/they want to do it again? Recognize, honor, appreciate, acknowledge….and you’ll continue to be promoted! Appreciation and honor makes what is excellent in others belong to us.

People won’t remember you for the positions you’ve held, promotions you made, or power you’ve carried–they will forever remember how you poured into their lives and how you made them feel! Rock your recognition today!

If you find yourself comparing or competing, this one’s for you!

One of the greatest places that I see organizations fail (or become stagnant) is when division comes in. When organizations are experiencing success, not only do checks soar, but egos rise. Have you heard the saying “money makes you more of who you are?”

It’s true. I’ve heard stories of leaders whose ego becomes big, and they stop promoting leaders in their upline to their team–and it’s not before long that the team catches on, and it typically turns on the leader, at some point or another.

As my mentor Donna Johnson says “The worse thing you can do is rundown your upline to look important to your team. Every time I see someone de-edify their upline it duplicates down. Eventually they are de-edified– always.”

One of my mentors told me a story about division that occured in her organization–ego came in, the leader stopped promoting the uplines calls and trainings to her team, and when my mentor saw their team at an event, people asked her why they were no longer invited or felt welcome to plug in to her team. When people realized what happened, they all turned on the leader who caused division and separation. It happens every time–just give it time! Eventually they will find out who the leaders are who have gone before them, and what they’ve had access to, all along!

I love this saying that I recently heard at an industry event I spoke at: “DKC= Drama Kills Checks!” Want to know how to increase your checks? Create a culture of unity, abundance, and allow your team to plug into the leaders that help them to grow (afterall, it does increase your check at the end of the day, doesn’t it?!) Let’s annihilate the spirit of competition and create a culture of collaboration on our teams!

My motto: We are “One Team, With One Mission, To Change A Whole Lotta Lives!”

Be the leader who creates an environment for your team to grow! Good leaders know how to edify the entire organization (which includes their corporate team, their upline, their downline, and the sideline sisters and brothers not on their team).  Why is this important????

Why is it important to edify your company? So your team feels a sense of security of whom they’re entrusting their future to. Why edify your downline? I think that’s an obvious, as they contribute to your income and they will either appreciate or resent that based on their relationship with you. Why edify your upline? This is critical so they are effective when working with your team on calls and at events—but you’ll also notice your team will give you respect in the same measure that they’ve seen you give those who have gone before you.

Be a person of abundance and integrity. Do the right thing at all times. Right is still right even if no one is doing it–and wrong is still wrong even if everyone is doing it. Honor your team and the company.  Create a culture of HONOR on your team.

Where there’s unity, you will receive your full reward.  When you can be trusted with the measure of leadership given to you now, you will be given more to lead.

As the good book tell us: “we have to honor those who labor among you and are over you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work”…Among you and over you= your leaders, those you lead, and your colleagues and company!

When I see groups stall, discord and division has usually entered in. They reach a measure of success but stall when pride comes or a spirit of competition comes in.

Commit to maintaining unity on your team. Model for them how to honor leadership in the company, and those you lead. Model for them how to be abundant with those in the company, regardless of whether or not you financially benefit. Remember, at the end of our life, there will be no teams. Show honor, respect, and appreciation, and in turn, YOU will receive the same measure of honor, respect, and appreciation.
